Solar Power Equipment: A Brief Summary

There is no energy source as abundant as the sun, with an estimated 1000 watts of energy per square meter hitting the earth each day. Humans have only recently begun to tap into this potential. Solar power kits are more available, more efficient, and come in different variations and styles than ever before, making a solar powered Earth seem more like science fact than science fiction. Essentially solar panels absorb sunlight during the day, then this absorbed energy is most commonly stored in a battery for later use.  Unfortunately, solar power is affected by the weather. Cloudy days prove to be difficult for solar powered homes and devices to absorb sunlight. Other factors also contribute to the efficiency of solar power systems such as air pollution and the sun's position in the sky.

The most common solar power system is the basic solar electric panel, which has the familiar rectangular shape with dark black panels. Hundreds of these basic panels can constitute an array.

The United States is one of several countries around the globe that employ several arrays in order to alleviate dependency on non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels. Of course, it is unlikely that the majority of homeowners in the U.S. have enough space in their back yards to build their own large array.  ven so, a homeowner may set up several solar panels in an open space. Panel arrays, combined with the correct components, may be set up to follow the sun as it travels across the sky, thus increasing the overall amount of sunlight absorbed each day.

The lack of space has not inhibited some homeowners from using solar power. Solar panels can be mounted on a roof that is exposed to sunlight over the course of the day. For those concerned about the aesthetic qualities or structural integrity of their home, solar roof tiles are an alternative to the large, and rather obvious solar panels. Solar roof tiles are more incognito, conforming into the roof of the home in contrast to the traditional solar panels which are mounted onto the roof.  These mounts may cause strain on the roof of the home, whereas the tiles generally are only thirty-three percent heavier than a standard roofing tile.

One of the drawbacks of solar power is the high initial cost. Solar panels are made of unique semi-conducting materials that are very expensive.  Despite the cost, many see it as a greener alternative than the consumption of fossil fuels. There is no greater energy source available than the sun, and its potential must be tapped.
