Clearly Displayed House Numbers For Safety

Unfortunately, there is something homeowners do not do that can actually make a difference in a life or death situation.  And that is making sure they have clearly displayed house or door numbers.   As much as people do a lot to improve their homes curb appeal, with beautiful landscaping and garden pieces, too many people forget that a very important part of every home are clearly displayed house number plates.

On a less important side, having clearly display house numbers makes your home look more welcoming. It makes it easier for your home to be found by friends. New visitors will find it easier to locate your home. It is helpful to delivery people and service contractors. But most important, it will make it easier for emergency responders to find your home in a 911 situation.

If you ride along some rural homes, or visit some older communities, you might see that the mailbox post has reflective numbers on them. This makes it a lot easier for an emergency vehicle to find the home in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, too many homes lack house numbers that can easily be read during the day, let alone also easily read after dark. This can cause serious delay in an emergency vehicle reaching your home in a timely fashion.

Unless you have family than can stand roadside and wave down that ambulance, you want to make sure the driver can find your house quickly, instead of spending their time driving one way, and then the other, searching for the right address. In a medical emergency, every minute counts.

It does not matter if you use plain number or something fancier like tile house numbers.  The important thing is that you install them and they are large enough to be seen from your road.

Before buying house numbers, check with your local fire department and ask what features they would like your numbers to have.  Ask them where the best place is to mount the numbers.  You might even be able to buy your house numbers from your fire department. Many volunteer fire departments sell reflective address numbers as a means to raise money for the station. They are typically made of the same material that is used to make street signs and are extremely durable and reflective.
