What You Can Expect from a Nanny Agency

Being a nanny is an exciting, rewarding job.  While the pay is usually very good, there is another, equally important factor.  You will have the opportunity to make a wonderful impact in the life of a child and his family.  As the best jobs can be obtained through agencies, knowing what to expect from a nanny agency can help you to land a great job.

A good nanny placement agency thoroughly screens its applicants.  As families trust them to provide suitable nannies, they need to know that every applicant they approve is qualified.  This is why there are a number of points covered in a screening process.

One part of screening is a background check.  They must be sure that you do not have a criminal history, or any personal issues which could affect your ability to do the job properly.  Background checks usually include criminal history checks, checking your credit history, and verifying your personal references.  You should be prepared to supply these references when they are requested.  They can include previous employers, teachers, and people for whom you have provided childcare in the past.

As nannies work with children in the family's home, it is essential to be sure that you are in good health.  You must not have any communicable diseases, nor any medical problems which could prevent you from doing your job effectively.  Checking your past and present medical history is for the entire  family's safety as well as for your own.

Nanny agencies often request a psychological screening.  This is so they will know that you are mature enough and competent to handle this demanding, and occasionally stressful, job.  Whether you are seeking to provide care for one youngster or a number of children in a family, and whether your ideal job consists of working specific shifts or being a live-in nanny, you must be responsible, dependable, and mature.

While nanny positions can be an excellent choice for the person who truly loves children, there is much more to the job than childcare.  Your duties may include general household chores, shopping, and cooking.  The family will be trusting you with their home and possessions as well as with their children.  This is why screening is so thorough, and necessary.  When you are prepared to give your very best, you will gain much personal satisfaction in return.  It might be the most wonderful experience of your entire life.
